Some
interesting news I found for the defense of mp3s, and Metallica
sueing Napster. Metallica's big break came about the year
1983-84. The reason they got discovered was because they were
trading their songs to people all over the world on audio
cassete, an illegal
mix tape,
which also contained "Big Band" music. It was like a
compilation. They'd have other bands stuff, and slip in a
Metallica song or two.
The
point is, these tapes are illegal, because they put other
artists songs on it without other artists consent. Metallica was
GIVING away songs that should have had to been paid for by the
recieving party. These artists were losing money, because
Metallica, and people all around the world were in this ring of
trading these illegal tapes.
Now,
isn't it hypocritical of them to sue napster? The only things
that has changed from what they were doing and what we're doing,
is the form in which it is being sent. Now we can listen to
music in minutes, rather than wait for a cassette someone
halfway around the world sent you. Rather than pay for shipping
and handling, we pay for our net bills.
You
know how many fans Metallica is losing because of this? Lots. I
used to respect them. I know a lot of people that used to
respect them, even though that all of their stuff as of late has
been garbage, people stuck by Metallica, because Metallica was
about the music. Now they don't their art to be traded as they
did with other artists before. They want to share their music
with the world, but for a price, like it's a privilege or
something. You are equating your own fans to theives, and most
aren't going to stick around to hear that.
Here's
the point, Metallica. If someone likes your stuff, they'll give
you money for it, most people will. I'm a die hard NIN fan, and
I've got all of their stuff on mp3. Thing is, I'm in the midst
of buying as many NIN CD's as I can, out of respect to them. I'm
only missing 4 halos.
Now,
If people won't give you money, becuase they have the mp3s,
chances are these people wouldn't buy your stuff anyway. They'd
buy copied CDs, maybe, or even trade an illegal
mix tape
with your stuff on it. They aren't getting the "real"
merchendise. Sure it sounds the exact same, and maybe even has a
home printed booklet, but it's not the real deal. Either way
they decide to get your music, they ain't giving you their
money.
The
cease of Napster, or even a little further.... mp3s, doesn't
mean people will automaticaly buy your CD.
This
is for you Metallica......
FUCK
YOU.
