Who hates the masses? You know, the
majority? Well, I've definitely got beef, and you may be a part
of the problem. So, with my first editorial on this sweet sweet
web site, here I go on a my attempt to make the world a better
place. Seeing that's not going to happen...what's the point?
Well, if you side with me, you aren't narrow minded. I'm narrow
minded for saying this, I know, but the difference is, I'm
right.
As with the editor of this column (who isn't me, by the
way...he will be using square brackets for his "editor's
comments, and he'd better not use many. [An ultimatum? This
editor is not pleased...] Oh yeah, and good use of Sunny D
on your editorial") [Thank you.], I wish I weren't
part of society. Reason why? Simple. I think it was the movie
Men In Black (a very crappy movie, by the way) that said it
best, a person is smart, people are dumb. Now, it's not very
accurate, I'll show you why.
First, I'll show you how the media affects people, or
vice versa. MAINSTREAM. Yes, the dreaded 'M'
word. These are the people I classify as the masses, and for
obvious enough reasons, I think you are probably intelligent
enough to figure out yourself. Ok, so I'm talking about
mainstream music. First, I must ask why? No, not why am I
talking, but why is it that mainstream junkies are unable to
appreciate good music? For example, I think Placebo hit 'almost'
mainstream status with the song Pure Morning (yes, I
bought the CD, read on). People buy this CD and only like that
song, leaving the other 11 tracks, well actually 12...there's a
secret song, rendered useless. Not worth listening to. But now
that Every Me Every You is on the radio, it now has a
stank as video, etc.. people like this song, which I think is
the worst song on the CD. Most take it to the point of being the
best song on the CD. Why? Because it's the newest hit, and
that's the only reason. [Maybe Placebo and Spice Girls should
do a duet.] Yep, only one more song that everyone adopts as
their favorite and Placebo will be mainstream. That is how the
media effects people.
What's my opinion? Sure, the song Pure Morning was
pretty good for a while. I still love the song. But, my
favorite song on the CD is by far track number 12 and 1/2, the
secret song. My best description of it is 8 minutes of pure
music, and it's an emotional rollercoaster. It's one of the only
songs out of industrial genre (but actually in it, according to
some) that actually got me hyped up. The last song to do that,
in this manner, was a Frontline Assembly song [FLA is
industrial], Ausgang Zumm Himmler, which is very trancy and
hypnotic. That hyped me up (brief note: anything that is trancy
hypes me up, go figure).
What do I make of these ramblings that I have just put
together? People, meaning the mainstream, have their favorite
songs decided for them, not by them. Back to the point of a
person not being as smart as they think they are. Ask them why
they like the new Britney Spears video [Uh...Britney Spears
breasts]. Now ask them what's so different about it,
musically speaking. I bet they can't answer it. If they can,
it'll be some lame-ass answer, guaranteed. Now ask them why they
don't like some music not in their washed-out-mmmbopping-world-of-pop.
"It's stupid." Great criticism from the great minds of
pop culture.
Despite mocking mainstream music, some of it is used for
good. Nine Inch Nails are mainstream. They have good music that
differs from the norm (although, these mainstream freaks only
like the song 'Perfect Drug', because it's on the radio
sometimes) and has more composition to their music than a lot of
other bands. Mainstream will only change if people who aren't
mainstream become mainstream, or at least become noticed by the
public. How does this happen?
Easy, a group or artist should make one song that the
mainstream can accept. Then they should do one more (or two at
most) mainstream song that is similar to the genre of music they
do. This way, they won't be remembered as a one hit wonder.
Then, they would go about creating music as they normally would,
and they will get noticed from their previous work. Instead of
getting reviews about how their music is bizarre and not what
people need in music, they will now get reviews about
revolutionizing music, and how your music is unique and
appealing. Mainstream reporters...why is it that they
even follow the masses? [They are the masses.] This group
or artist would have been making the same music had they not
made those 2 or 3 radio songs. But, for some reason, these
mainstream songs impact their other songs to be better. I don't
know how this works.
Why do people have to go through all of this to get noticed?
A person is not smart, a person is dumb, that's why people are
dumb. A mainstream junkie can't decide on a good song without
their friends or the radio. How smart is that?
So, what will happen if my music becomes mainstream?
Well, if my music and only my music became mainstream among
non-mainstream composers, it'd be pretty sad. I think for me to
become mainstream, a lot of others would have to before me,
because people are dumb. And if this were to happen, mainstream
would be the first place that sensible people would be able to
look to find good, quality, well constructed music. Smart music,
if you will.
[What happens if apocryptii
gets his face stuck in between Britney Spears breasts though?]
